Ice Matters

Nik Rasula

After a trying start, it’s been a wonderful season. Hope everyone’s been able to get out for a skate.
Special thanks to all our volunteers. Thanks guys…you are the best!
An interesting anecdote I’d like to share.
During the November rink-building period with Roger Smith, Larry Lozinski and yours truly flooding
copious amounts, our hose-ace Roger was busily applying layers, with Larry and me moving
hose, thawing section and tramping unevens; we notice, in the distance, a female form, walking
across our rapidly freezing base. Turns out, it’s our man Roger’s prom date Debbie, from old Sedgwick
High School, so many years ago. As Roger and Debbie greet and discuss characters and
“adventures” past; duty beckons and they are soon parted. With Roger back at the hose, and with
promises to stay in touch, Roger’s old-flame departs. And as she puts a reasonable distance between
herself and our Sedgwick man, Roger slams down the nozzle-end, and cries “of all the frozensloughs…
in all the towns…in all the world… and she has to walk onto mine.”
