Unauthorized Person Checking Gate and Lock

5/30/2022

This weekend a person was caught on camera in a neighbour's yard. He took a photo of their gate lock - which is odd. While we can't say what his objective was, we trust that someone with a legitimate reason would ask first.

The screenshot below is from video footage caught on the owner's security camera.

If you recognize this person, please let us know (we will update the owner) or report to our Community Police Liaison officer:

Constable Richard Marshall

Temporary Accommodation Needed for Speed Skater

5/26/2022

A speed skater from Quebec will be in Calgary for 6 weeks over the summer to train at the Olympic Oval. The speed skater, who is 18 years old and male, is looking for temporary accommodations. Dates are roughly July 13th to August 20th.

If you are willing to share a room in your home, or know of other possible options, please send a message along with your contact info. We will then share it with the speed skater, who will make a decision based on the best option for their own needs. If you are contacted, we suggest being prepared to discuss conditions (including costs, if any).

Please note, St Andrews Heights Community Association does not know the skater and cannot provide a reference. Please complete any background checks you deem necessary for accepting a stranger into your home.

Water Quality Meter Found

5/26/2022

One of our neighbours found a TDS3 Water Meter on the pedestrian path between 11 Avenue and Toronto Cres. If you lost one, please send a message and we will connect you. Note: the one shown here is only a sample (not the actual meter).

Glad you asked: A TDS meter is an inexpensive digital tool to instantly check your overall water quality. TDS = Total Dissolved Solids (such as salt, metal or mineral) in the water.

Property Vandalized

5/18/2022

A house up for sale in St Andrews Place has been broken into and vandalized. Damages include:
  • Spray paint on the outside of the home
  • Back door broken in
  • Spray paint on walls, cabinets, floors
  • Stove door window smashed
  • Spray paint through out the basement, including furnace and hot water heater
  • Holes drilled into doors and walls
We are not sure exactly when this happened, however it was reported to us this afternoon. If you live near a house that is for sale in St Andrews Place (and have cameras that might have caught these events), please check your footage. Please report to police if you find anything. In particular those with cameras in the back alley should take a look.

Sadly, there may not be much the owner can do, other than filing an insurance claim - or selling for less (and let the new owner fix).

Community Services Registry

5/17/2022

Yes, it's also time to think about yard care. The SAHCA board has previously kept a list of people (or companies) willing to provide services such as snow shoveling, babysitting and daycare. We recently got a request from a neighbour looking for someone to mow their lawn.

If you'd like to be referred, please send a message with your name and phone number. Please also include any additional yard care services you are willing to offer, such as weeding or trimming branches (and let us know if we should add you to the snow removal list as well). We will then share this list with anyone in the community who asks.

Note, we are happy to share the list, but can't make guarantees about the quality of service. Please DDD - do due diligence.

Lost & Found

5/17/2022

Chief Crowfoot School has alerted us that they have a fairly large number of items in their Lost and Found Department.

Coat? Boots? Hat? Teddy Bear? If something of yours has gone missing (especially if it's something that belongs to a child), don't forget to check in with their office. Items frequently end up there after an adventure in the school yard or playground.

Right now they have a large number of children's coats. It's that time of year when it's easy to throw it off, then forget to take it home.

Please note, the school is not able to provide medical assistance to lost stuffies.

Odd Events

5/16/2022

A owner on Toronto Cres experienced an odd event this morning around 11am. A man in his 20s walked up their driveway, gave a pleasant greeting, then turned around and left. Soon after, the owner found a strange setup next to their garage. It was an upright shopping cart with a leanto built around it. The setup contained sleeping items.

When they mentioned this to their neighbour, they learned about someone else who had been in the same area near the garage at about 9:30am. The descriptions of the two people were different. The 9:30am person had said he was ‘going back to the hospital’ and seemed to move in that direction. The owner has since dismantled the leanto and moved everything out to be discarded.

Another neighbour (not connected to the above event) was away for a few days. When they returned last Thursday, they found a what looked like a duffle bag in their yard. It turned out to be a rolled up sleeping bag. They suspect someone was sleeping in their yard while they were away.

SAHCA is committed to helping increase awareness in order to decrease opportunity for those causing trouble in our community. We encourage residents to:
  • secure their homes, garages, vehicles, yards and other belongings,
  • to install cameras and alarms where possible,
  • to report to police as needed, and
  • to watch out for each other.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

5/12/2022

Okay, there is no hot tin roof. However, there is a black and white cat. And it's running around St Andrew's Heights. It is also frequently visiting one yard where two big dogs live.

The dogs are contained within the yard, but the cat is regularly entering the yard. The owner cannot guarantee their dogs will not act on their base instincts - which likely won't end well for the cat. The owner would also prefer not to call animal control. There are, of course, also coyotes around - who don't get fed nearly as promptly as the two big dogs.

PLEASE ... if this is your cat, keep it at home.

The dog owner will wait a couple days from sendout of this notice. If the cat is still hanging around, they will be calling animal control to come get it. If the cat is a stray, this will help it find a new home (and ensure its safety). However, if the cat belongs to you, you'd probably prefer not to have that hassle.

Please keep it at home.

Suspicious Event On University Drive

5/10/2022

Recently a neighbour on University Drive had their car alarm go off. The car was parked in their carport. They went outside to see someone in a gray hoodie walking away. They did not pursue the person, but are obviously concerned. This happened one day after their immediate neighbour had their detached garage broken into and things stolen (yes, that owner did file a police report).

13th Avenue "Visitor"

5/5/2022

This person was caught on a neighbour's doorstep at 4am three days ago. He was looking around, banging on the door and testing the doorknob. When asked by the owner, he said he thought this was 'where he was supposed to stay.' For obvious reasons, including other recent breakins and thefts, this is a disturbing experience.

If anybody recognizes this guy, or knows anything more, please send a message (or report to police). Of course, we don't know his actual plan - but we are doing our best to make SAH a more difficult 'opportunity' for those with criminal intent.
