The City of Calgary is widening the existing sidewalk to change it into a pathway on the east side along the 29 Street N.W. service road to improve the experience for people who walk and cycle through this area. Currently, there is an existing pathway at both ends of the 29 Street N.W. service road. The new pathway upgrade will connect to the existing pathway at both ends of the service road to complete the gap in the pathway network. To complete this work, the roadway width will be reduced to accommodate the new pathway. The two-way vehicular travel lanes and parking along the street will remain. Also, the intersection at 13 Avenue N.W. and 29 Street N.W. service road will be converted into an all-way stop to allow for safe turning movements from all directions. For more information, please contact 311. This work will be incorporated in the City’s Roads Surface Overlay Program for 29 Street N.W., please visit calgary.ca/paving for more information on the annual paving program.
What type of work will be completed? This work will include removing the existing sidewalk, curb, gutter and driveway within the project limits on 29 Street N.W. service road. We will then be adding a new curb, gutter and asphalt pathway. We will be reconstructing the concrete driveway section that is within the road right of way to create a depressed driveway crossing. A depressed driveway crossing is an area where a private driveway accesses a public road by sidewalk, boulevard, or curb and gutter. New traffic signage and pavement markings will also be added at the intersection of 13 Avenue N.W. and 29 Street N.W. service road. When will this work take place? This roadside work which includes curb and gutter, and pathway and driveway work is scheduled to start the week of June 14 and it is anticipated to take approximately one month to complete. Residents will be informed through a construction notice delivered to their home approximately 1-2 days prior to the start of construction work. The surface overlay work which includes milling and paving of the road is tentatively scheduled for September 2021. Note that schedules may change based on unexpected weather or site conditions. Will there be any impact to private property? We don’t foresee any impacts to private property; however, minimal trimming of shrubs or trees on private property may be required where necessary. All measures will be taken to avoid or minimize such impact. Will there be other impacts I need be aware of during construction? To complete the construction work, we may need to shut off your water supply for short period of time. We will provide advance notice on the date and timeframe if we need to shut off your water supply through a construction notice being delivered to your home approximately 1-2 days prior to the start of construction work. Will there be any changes to parking? There will be no permanent changes to parking after this work is completed. During construction, residents will not be allowed to park along 29 Street N.W. service road for approximately one month. We are asking residents to please park on other streets nearby during construction. Who is responsible for snow removal from the pathway? As per section 67 of the City’s current Street Bylaw, residents will continue to be expected to clear 1.5m of sidewalk / pathway that is adjacent to their properties. Please visit https://www.calgary.ca/csps/abs/bylaws-by-topic/snow-ice.html for more information. What is a service road? A service road runs parallel to a main road and allows local traffic to gain safe access to their property. Where can I get more information? For more information, please contact 311.
