Shared e-scooters have been a huge hit in Calgary! Calgarians and tourists took over 1.7 million trips by e-scooter since this pilot began in late 2018. That’s over 2.2 million kilometres travelled. However, this is still just a pilot and it is wrapping up this fall. The City needs your feedback to inform whether shared e-scooters become a permanent fixture on Calgary streets.
While hugely successful in terms of usage, there have been challenges around safety and storage. If approved to stay, the rules for e-scooters could also change, so we need feedback there too. The key item I’m interested in hearing feedback on is whether or not the sidewalk is the correct place for e-scooters. Calgary bans e-scooters from the street, while many other cities ban them from the sidewalk. Do we have this right? I’ve also heard that nearly everyone prefers when e-scooter riders have a dedicated place to ride, such as a cycle track of bike lane. This takes them off the sidewalk and off the street. The City needs your feedback about whether we need more dedicated space to keep people on e-scooters and bikes safe. That’s an obvious “YES!” for me.
