Today a most awesome event happened after one of our neighbours reported something they witnessed this morning. A U-Haul travelling along 13th Avenue had the back doors open - and things were falling out. This included some photos which the neighbour who witnessed the event collected.
That neighbour made their best effort to get the direction of the U-Haul - which included turning from 13th onto Toronto, and soon after turning back onto 13th from Kingston, heading east. The neighbour contacted police - plus took a photo of the photos and shared with us. We shared with all of you. As it turns out, the neighbour with the U-Haul was heading out to the lake. Another neighbour who saw the email we sent out recognized the people in the photo. This allowed us to coordinate collection of as many items as possible (and to deliver them to the neighbour of the neighbour). Yet another neighbour found a USB-C plug on their grass. "Hmmm," she thought. "Likely something was stolen." She showed her husband who agreed. Something was stolen. Seconds later, one of them opened their email to see our news about the U-Haul. They sent a message. We then coordinated getting the plug from that neighbour to the neighbour of the neighbour. If you're confused, don't be. This was a bunch of amazing people looking out for each other. We don't yet know that the plug does belong to the U-Haul neighbour. But it was definitely neighbours stepping up for neighbours. Thank you to the original neighbour who reported to us (and also reported to police). Thank you to all neighbours who jumped up to help. You're all awesome! ![]() One of our neighbours witnessed a U-Haul travelling through the neighbourhood with the back doors open. A number of things were falling out, including these photos. If this is your stuff, you might want to followup asap. This might include calling your U-Haul contact and following the route they took. The neighbour who witnessed did their best to see where it was going and/or had already been. It went up 13th Avenue, turned left on Toronto, seems to have lost some things on 12th, and then returned to 13th via Kingston. From there it seemed to go east (so there might be things along 16th Avenue, University or Crowchild). Thank you to the neighbour who reported to us (and also reported to police). They have turned the photos over to the police. Who-ever the owner is, we're sure that if you chose to move it, you likely didn't want to lose it. The following message was received from one of our neighbours:
"We live on Toronto Crescent. On Friday, July 15th we were hosting a party in the backyard and had several of our guest’s cars parked outside. At 6pm, a man broke into my brother’s car by smashing in the window. My husband saw him and ran around to the front lawn. The man jumped into a car being driven by someone else and sped off in what we believe was a Chevy Silverado. The police were given a description and partial license plate. This was quite bold given that there were ~15 people in the backyard (with kids frequently running around to the front yard). We believe they were after my brother’s dashcam. Another painful reminder to leave NOTHING of value in your car, especially if it’s visible." This event is shocking given that it also happened during daytime hours. Conclusion We need quorum to pass the required business items so help us out by attending the SAHCA AGM this Monday evening. This tool bag was found very early this morning. It was in the back alley near the corner of 11th Avenue and Toronto Cres. The person who found it (behind a property that is for sale) did not spend a lot of time looking through it, but it is very heavy. It might be stolen property. If you are the owner, or know who is, please let us know so we can help get everything back where it belongs.
Two different homeowners sent in video footage today of a person checking out their properties overnight. Screenshots were shared with both homeowners, who agreed it looked like the same individual. For one owner, this is the third prowler recently caught trying to get in their yard. The other owner had things stolen.
The two yards are at opposite ends of St Andrew's Heights. The second video was about an hour after the first. This might also mean he was in other yards overnight as well. The second homeowner describes the prowler as follows: Hair: light coloured, baseball cap/light coloured, short scruffy beard below his chin, Top: light coloured jacket over a dark looking vest/wearing a back pack, Bottom: long pants, Shoes: shoes seemed to have wrapping, Age: mid 30's?, Sex: male, Ethnicity: Caucasian, Build: thin He stole an Eddie Bauer stroller (used for the owner's dog who recently had hip surgery) and an air mattress that the owner was allowing to dry out on the porch after it was drenched in the rain. This person was caught on Ring camera this afternoon. He was at a house on 12th Avenue. He walked up to the door, looked around, looked in the mailbox and front window, then leaned down and grabbed 2 packages. He then just casually walked away.
If you know who he is, or have other related info, please report to our Community Police Liaison Officer (contact below) -- or let us know, so we can share with the neighbour who reported. We apologize that we can't make the image clearer. There is also a more full-body image on our Facebook page. This guy was caught on security camera in a neighbour’s yard. He appeared homeless. While he didn’t take anything, he seemed to be scouting. The neighbour wishes to alert others.
The St. Andrew's Heights Community Association in conjunction with Triple Meg Soccer is offering a one-week long summer soccer camp for kids aged 6 to 12. This is a wonderful opportunity for your children (and you) to meet other neighbourhood children and parents!

It was early morning on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. They scoped the garage and gate, though did not gain access. The neighbour is sharing in case someone else experienced a breakin or other loss / damage that these two might have caused elsewhere. We are astounded by their casual manner and willingness to scope properties in daylight hours (even if it was very early). If you know who they are, or experienced an incident that might be related, please report to our Community Police Liaison Officer with the Calgary Police Service: Constable Richard Marshall Email: pol4352@calgarypolice.ca District #3 Office Number: 403-428-6342 Available Monday - Thursday 6am - 4pm Got ideas for making our neighbourhood a more difficult place for those creating problems? The following is shared by an existing client hoping to help them out: Experienced. Reliable. Honest. With References. Looking for daytime hours (8am to 4pm), Monday to Friday. Available immediately. Contact: 403-510-3968 or Cvcf@shaw.ca This weekend a person was caught on camera in a neighbour's yard. He took a photo of their gate lock - which is odd. While we can't say what his objective was, we trust that someone with a legitimate reason would ask first.
The screenshot below is from video footage caught on the owner's security camera. If you recognize this person, please let us know (we will update the owner) or report to our Community Police Liaison officer: Constable Richard Marshall Email: pol4352@calgarypolice.ca District #3 Office Number: 403-428-6342 Available Monday - Thursday 6am - 4pm A speed skater from Quebec will be in Calgary for 6 weeks over the summer to train at the Olympic Oval. The speed skater, who is 18 years old and male, is looking for temporary accommodations. Dates are roughly July 13th to August 20th.
If you are willing to share a room in your home, or know of other possible options, please send a message along with your contact info. We will then share it with the speed skater, who will make a decision based on the best option for their own needs. If you are contacted, we suggest being prepared to discuss conditions (including costs, if any). Please note, St Andrews Heights Community Association does not know the skater and cannot provide a reference. Please complete any background checks you deem necessary for accepting a stranger into your home. One of our neighbours found a TDS3 Water Meter on the pedestrian path between 11 Avenue and Toronto Cres. If you lost one, please send a message and we will connect you. Note: the one shown here is only a sample (not the actual meter).
Glad you asked: A TDS meter is an inexpensive digital tool to instantly check your overall water quality. TDS = Total Dissolved Solids (such as salt, metal or mineral) in the water. A house up for sale in St Andrews Place has been broken into and vandalized. Damages include:
Sadly, there may not be much the owner can do, other than filing an insurance claim - or selling for less (and let the new owner fix). Yes, it's also time to think about yard care. The SAHCA board has previously kept a list of people (or companies) willing to provide services such as snow shoveling, babysitting and daycare. We recently got a request from a neighbour looking for someone to mow their lawn.
If you'd like to be referred, please send a message with your name and phone number. Please also include any additional yard care services you are willing to offer, such as weeding or trimming branches (and let us know if we should add you to the snow removal list as well). We will then share this list with anyone in the community who asks. Note, we are happy to share the list, but can't make guarantees about the quality of service. Please DDD - do due diligence. Chief Crowfoot School has alerted us that they have a fairly large number of items in their Lost and Found Department.
Coat? Boots? Hat? Teddy Bear? If something of yours has gone missing (especially if it's something that belongs to a child), don't forget to check in with their office. Items frequently end up there after an adventure in the school yard or playground. Right now they have a large number of children's coats. It's that time of year when it's easy to throw it off, then forget to take it home. Please note, the school is not able to provide medical assistance to lost stuffies. A owner on Toronto Cres experienced an odd event this morning around 11am. A man in his 20s walked up their driveway, gave a pleasant greeting, then turned around and left. Soon after, the owner found a strange setup next to their garage. It was an upright shopping cart with a leanto built around it. The setup contained sleeping items.
When they mentioned this to their neighbour, they learned about someone else who had been in the same area near the garage at about 9:30am. The descriptions of the two people were different. The 9:30am person had said he was ‘going back to the hospital’ and seemed to move in that direction. The owner has since dismantled the leanto and moved everything out to be discarded. Another neighbour (not connected to the above event) was away for a few days. When they returned last Thursday, they found a what looked like a duffle bag in their yard. It turned out to be a rolled up sleeping bag. They suspect someone was sleeping in their yard while they were away. Okay, there is no hot tin roof. However, there is a black and white cat. And it's running around St Andrew's Heights. It is also frequently visiting one yard where two big dogs live.
The dogs are contained within the yard, but the cat is regularly entering the yard. The owner cannot guarantee their dogs will not act on their base instincts - which likely won't end well for the cat. The owner would also prefer not to call animal control. There are, of course, also coyotes around - who don't get fed nearly as promptly as the two big dogs. PLEASE ... if this is your cat, keep it at home. The dog owner will wait a couple days from sendout of this notice. If the cat is still hanging around, they will be calling animal control to come get it. If the cat is a stray, this will help it find a new home (and ensure its safety). However, if the cat belongs to you, you'd probably prefer not to have that hassle. Please keep it at home. Recently a neighbour on University Drive had their car alarm go off. The car was parked in their carport. They went outside to see someone in a gray hoodie walking away. They did not pursue the person, but are obviously concerned. This happened one day after their immediate neighbour had their detached garage broken into and things stolen (yes, that owner did file a police report).
SAHCA is committed to helping increase awareness in order to decrease opportunity for those causing trouble in our community. We encourage residents to:
This person was caught on a neighbour's doorstep at 4am three days ago. He was looking around, banging on the door and testing the doorknob. When asked by the owner, he said he thought this was 'where he was supposed to stay.' For obvious reasons, including other recent breakins and thefts, this is a disturbing experience.
If anybody recognizes this guy, or knows anything more, please send a message (or report to police). Of course, we don't know his actual plan - but we are doing our best to make SAH a more difficult 'opportunity' for those with criminal intent. |
